The Red Piano presents Dave Babcock
Wednesday, November 11th at 8pm



For over two decades, Dave Babcock has built his reputation as one of Canada's finest saxophonists. This dynamic horn man is also a respected bandleader, singer and producer who’s playing is steeped in the living traditions of jazz and blues. Dave has moved with the times, keeping his finger on the pulse of today's music while never forgetting his roots.

Throughout his career, Dave has had the opportunity to perform and record with many great artists. He’s played with Edmonton’s own jazz masters Tommy Banks and Big Miller, Canadian pop mainstays KD Lang and Tom Cochrane and respected bluesmen Colin James, Tom Lavin, Amos Garrett and Jack deKeyzer. Dave has also played with international pop artists Petula Clark, Glen Campbell and Wayne Newton; Motown stars The Temptations, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and Mary Wilson of The Supremes as well as R&B vocal greats The Coasters and The Platters.

Dave’s long association with Edmonton’s Stony Plain Records and the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has enabled him to work with legendary blues and roots artists like Long John Baldry, Solomon Burke, Albert Collins, Floyd Dixon, Rosco Gordon, Flaco Jimenez, Janiva Magness, Jimmy McCracklin, Taj Mahal, Big Jay McShann, Maria Muldaur, Duke Robillard, Doug Sahm and Jimmy Witherspoon. Dave has also warmed up for Willie Dixon, Dr. John, Delbert McClinton, The Pointer Sisters, George Thorogood and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Dave is a much sought after studio musician and sideman, with appearances on two Juno award-winning albums amongst his numerous credits. He's performed many times on national radio and television shows, played at major jazz, blues and folk festivals and in theatres and nightclubs all across Canada.

Dave has made two albums to date including his 2004 release Happenstance and the ARIA Award winning release Both Feet with his Jump Orchestra.

Dave's soulful saxophone and smooth vocals are being showcased in several musical settings. The projects he leads include The Dave Babcock Group, hard swinging jazz band The Jump Orchestra, his own high-octane blues outfit The Nightkeepers and the 10-piece show band The Top Ten Show & Revue. Dave is a long-time member of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival house band and also performs regularly with the newly formed Edmonton Jazz Orchestra.

The Red Piano presents Katie Perman

Katie Perman was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and has always been active in the music scene. She graduated from the Grant MacEwan College music program, majoring in both vocal performance and composition, and has studied piano for six years.

The past few years she has had the opportunity to perform with the Kit Kat Club, the Dave Babcock Orchestra, Torben Holm-Pederson, Mike Lent, Lyle Molzan, PJ Perry, Rubim De Toledo, Doug Organ, Sandro Dominelli, Charlie Austin, Chris Andrews and many others. She currently performs regularly as a dueling piano player at the Red Piano, as well as in a 60's, 70's, 80's themed cover band called "The Top Ten"

“Growing up with an extensive vocal jazz background, I like songs with many layers and textures, but at the same time appreciate songs that can stand out on their own, with just piano and voice. I love involving the audience and getting them laughing as much as I love pouring my heart out with solo piano to a silent crowd.”

Helen Magerowski is an Edmonton based vocalist and music educator. A graduate of Grant MacEwan College, she has enjoyed a successful performing career across North America and Europe covering a variety of styles including smooth jazz, pop and R&B. She has developed her own unique style and sound with many modern arrangements of classic pieces. She is thrilled to be performing with some of Edmonton’s best musical talents; Andrew Glover on piano, Sandro Dominelli on drums, and Mike Hill on bass. Helen is looking forward to the release of her debut album entitled “Here’s to Life”.

The Red Piano presents Diane E. Stabel
Wednesday, December 23rd at 8pm


Praised for her emotionally evocative voice, inventive phrasing and technical finesse, Diana Stabel is a young songbird ready to spread her wings. Stabel’s vocal prowess and passion for many musical styles has allowed her to develop a versatility rare in young singers. Most recently, she was seen performing a jazzy duet with Colin James as part of the Colin James & The Little Big Band’s Christmas symphony tour. In late 2006, Stabel released her debut jazz release, Wave, working with such local jazz musicians as Sandro Dominelli, Chris Andrew, Mike Lent and Robert Walsh.
